MOMENTS - HOME
It’s Valentine’s Day.
A friend emails:
Roses are red.
Is love obsolete?
Devotion's passé,
but affection's so sweet.
**
I answer:
You ask,
is love obsolete?
**
Is love obsolete?
Not on this street,
not in this lifetime,
not in this lifeline
Is love obsolete?
Are feet obsolete?
Are treats obsolete?
Is life obsolete?
Is love obsolete?
Obscene, the suggestion -
though most live
with just the suggestion of love
What a question -
is love obsolete?
Has it ever been the right time,
has it ever been that love is fine,
that love flourishes
Not just something we visit,
like tourists visit the museum
Yes that's the famous Mona Lisa
Yes that's the naked David
Yes ... that's love,
I think there behind the Etruscan caskets
And why are you asking,
is love obsolete?
Love isn't easy,
it flows underground,
it's dammed and jammed
and held down by angers and grudges
hard old sludge that won't budge
But is love obsolete?
Easy to defeat love
easy to treat it as debris underfoot
easy to bury love
not easy to hurry love
But is love obsolete?
Misplaced, more likely
Misguided, untended
Unwatered, unmended
Misplaced and derided
Untended, unkempt
Like an old drunk
Who ever would have thought
at seventeen
of love like an old drunk
untended, unkempt
instead of a god to revere
No, love's not obsolete
It's just sometimes obscenely hard to love well
