Freedom of religion and PRIORITIES. Why doesn’t everyone know we need to evaluate priorities?
We’ve all heard of freedom of religion. But what is the PRIORITY? Agamemnon killed his daughter. He was told to do so by the gods. Is that freedom of religion - or murder? His wife considered it murder - and killed him.
Priorities are crucial. If you give religion top priority, that means there is no ethical standard whatsoever. All you have to do is claim, my god says so. Kill your daughter - as Agamemnon killed his daughter, because the gods demanded this. Chop out a young man’s heart - as the Aztecs did. Kill slaves so they will be there in the after life, where they will continue being slaves - as the pharoahs did. Anything can be justified if the top priority is freedom of religion.
Over and over we need to consider priorities.
How to establish priorities? Human rights. By looking at:
What harms us? And what allows us to flourish?
In other words, liberty - including freedom of religion - until harm, and only until harm. Put informally: your liberty ends where my nose begins. With genitial mutilation, for instance, religious freedom ends where a female's genitals begin.
Knowing we need to pay attention to priorities makes everything fall into place.
Yes, freedom of religion is important - but it isn’t the top priority. Elsa
