THE STORY

A friend wrote to tell me of the loss of a friend, the only friend who lived close by. He should write a Lonely Highway song, he said.

I sat down and started writing.

lonely highways, lonely byways
lonely streets and avenues

Soon I came to

lonely kitchen

The words kept coming.

A few minutes later, I opened Audacity, a little sound recording program. I recorded the piece, as it was fresh inside me.

I did not notice the cat curled beside me, purring.

I tried recording again later, no cat beside me - but the feeling wasn't there. So I have left most of the original recording.

And that's the story of how Lonely Highways, Lonely Kitchen came to be.

My friend, by the way, went on, soon after, to write a love song.
